Carter G. Woodson was the second African American to receive a PhD from Harvard. This passionate historian, established the "Association for the Study of Negro Life and Culture" and later "Negro History Week" in 1926.  His life and legacy taught black and white persons to learn about, understand and appreciate African American contributions to this world.                                  He was born 12-19-1875 and died 4-3-1950.

 Hattie McDaniel was the first African American Woman to earn the Academy Award Oscar for her role as "Mammy" in "Gone with the Wind" The role may have been controversial but her acting chops are undisputed. She broke the glass ceiling for those who followed her.  Born Wichita KS 1895 died in 1952 at age 57 from breast cancer.
